Acrimony follows Melinda Moore (Taraji P. Henson), a devoted but emotionally unstable wife who financially and emotionally supports her husband, Robert (Lyriq Bent), through years of failure. Robert is obsessed with developing a self-charging battery, and Melinda gives up her inheritance to fund his dreams. However, their marriage crumbles after years of struggle, leading to a divorce when Melinda suspects Robert of infidelity.
Shortly after their separation, Robert’s invention is bought by a major company, making him a millionaire. As a gesture of gratitude, he gives Melinda $10 million and even buys back her mother’s house, but this only fuels her anger. She becomes obsessed with the idea that she was meant to be with Robert, especially after learning he has proposed to his longtime acquaintance, Diana.
Melinda begins stalking the couple, confronting them in public and posting delusional rants online. In the film’s intense climax, she sneaks onto their honeymoon yacht, determined to reclaim her “rightful” place. Armed with a gun, she terrorizes Robert and Diana, leading to a physical confrontation. In the end, Melinda falls overboard after being tangled in an anchor chain, drowning as Robert helplessly watches.
